Tough subject and yet a great read This seems to me a very well crafted blend of a very tough subject- not sugar coated at all- with and engaging and hopeful tone. In the middle of the worst possible human conditions, emotional and physical, hope and resilience can still live. Most of the main characters are well defined and you care about them. The gay subject seems to be seen a bit from today’s perspective, not sure how “ live and let live” a Nazi concentration camp could have been.

I've read a number of books detailing the Nazi's most infamous death camp Auschwitz so was expecting the devastating descriptions of the appalling living conditions and inhumane treatment of the prisoners. What I wasn't expecting was the glimpse of hope and humanity the prisoners of building 31 managed to preserve.
